The Sumter Community Concert Band was founded in 1982 with four major purposes

*To provide an opportunity for individual musical expression and growth among its members through the rehearsal and performance of band literature 
*To contribute positively to the musical environment of the area it serves 
*To provide an opportunity for contact among qualifed musicians
*To reaffirm the community concert band position in American music
